Are you looking to add a little mysterious and exotic touch to your home or exterior?

Moroccan lanterns may be just what you are looking for. Moroccan lanterns have a rich, exotic history and their design is the amalgamation of many cultures – African, European, Persian and Indian. They irradiate a rustic feel, and yet they add a sense of otherworldliness. Only when lit in a darkened room, their beauty can be truly appreciated. Light filters through intricate metal cutwork patterns and colored glass, and creates a beautiful “starry” canopy.

Moroccan lantern design takes its roots from Moorish and Moroccan architecture. Throughout history, because of its strategic location between Africa, Europe, and Asia, Morocco has received cultural inputs from Arab, Persia, Europe & Sub-Saharan Africa and has acted as a cultural conduit for their fusion. This fusion reflects perfectly in the unique design of the lamps.

Moroccan lanterns were brought to India by Mughal emperors along with other architecture marvels. Moroccan lamps found its home in India in the city of Moradabad, established in 1625 AD by Rustam Khan under the Emperor Shah Jahan. Moradabad, also known as Pital Nagri (Brass City), with its famous brass handicrafts industry has helped to flourish this art in India.

The traditional Moroccan hanging lamps (lanterns) are made out of tinted stained glass and rustic brass or wrought iron metalwork. The metalwork lattice can be extremely elaborate and even awe-inspiring. These lanterns are traditionally designed to hold candles/tea lights. Two of the most popular colors used in Moroccan lanterns are blue and amber, though most of the colorful lanterns consist of a beautiful combination of exuberant colors green, red, yellow and orange as well.

In ancient Islamic tradition, decorating lamps was a form of ‘Barakah‘ meaning spiritual wisdom and blessing transmitted from God. Artisans were careful not to disobey any of their religious laws, which prevented them from drawing human figures; so instead, you will find symbols, geometric shapes, and nature patterns. Traditionally, these designs were believed to ward off evil spirits and protect the beholder. The fish pattern, for instance, symbolizes water, fertility, and prosperity. The lizard or salamander represents a seeker of the sun or the human soul seeking light.

Moroccan Lamps – New craze in Home Décor

Moroccan lamps are an excellent way to bring a perfect exotic touch to your indoor and outdoor design. These unique hanging lamps will give a special tone and ambiance to any room. They can also bring a sense of style to areas in the home which often tend to be overlooked like staircase, bookshelves, floor corners and home entrances.

Many lanterns can be hung in or around trees or big central objects to create a fantastic night-time lighting scene. This décor method can be used in various themed events like weddings and parties as well as in themed restaurants.

Moroccan lamps create a beautiful enchanting effect by diffusing the light through the colored glasses and perforated frames. This peaceful light makes it an excellent choice for areas where relaxation is important like a yoga studio or Japanese gardens.

With all its amazing light and traditional effects, Moroccan lamps have become a new favorite Home Décor light items across the world.
