Description

Dogon Carved Zoomorphic Trough (Aduro Kuro)

Carved from a single block of hardwood, this zoomorphic trough embodies the rich cosmology and artistic heritage of the Dogon people of Mali. Traditionally kept in the home of a lineage head, vessels like this were used during goru, an annual ritual marking the winter solstice and honouring both Amma, the Creator, and the ancestors responsible for protecting the community.

Referred to as aduno koro — the “ark of the world” — these vessels symbolise the mythic ark sent by Amma to organise and populate the universe. The horse-head terminals represent Nommo, the primordial being who transformed into a horse to guide the first eight ancestors across the earth. The carved figures along the body portray these ancestors, while the lizard-like creature separating them represents ayo geu, the black crocodile from Dogon cosmology.

With its deep patina, sculptural form, and mounted steel stand, this piece offers both cultural depth and strong visual presence — perfect for collectors, designers, and interiors seeking authenticity and character.
