Description

Agogo Double Bells

The African Agogo bell is a vital instrument in ensemble music as a time keeper.

An agogô (Yoruba: agogo, meaning bell) is a single or a multiple bell now used throughout the world but with origins in traditional Yoruba and Edo music and also in the samba baterias (percussion ensembles). The agogô may be the oldest samba instrument and was based on West African Yoruba single or double bells. The agogô has the highest pitch of any of the bateria instruments.

Forged and hand-beaten from iron, agogo feature a larger low-pitched barrel (the parent bell) and a smaller high-pitched barrel (the child bell, said to rest on the bosom of the protective parent).

This bell produces a range of interesting sounds.

Small – High pitch – 17cm tall
Medium – Mid pitch – 25cm tall
Large – Lower pitch – 30cm tall
