Description

Dogon Granary Door – Mali (Heron & Ancestor Motifs)

This carved granary door originates from the Dogon people of Mali, a culture celebrated for its symbolic carving traditions and spiritual connection to ancestry. Once fitted to the entrance of a family granary, doors like this were created to protect the harvest while invoking blessings of prosperity and continuity.

Standing at 148 cm tall, this is a substantial and visually commanding example.
The door features:

  • Twin heron figures — symbols of fertility, balance, and the life-giving relationship between the human and spiritual realms.

  • Two carved ancestral faces — representing protection, lineage and the presence of those who came before.

  • Traditional geometric borders — hand-carved in relief, adding rhythm and movement.

  • A naturally aged patina — surface wear consistent with traditional use and age.

  • Original metal elements — enhancing authenticity and character.

Each Dogon door is completely unique, shaped by the hands, region and story of the carver.
Displayed on a wall, or leaning against timber, concrete or stone surfaces, it becomes a striking sculptural object that pairs beautifully with minimalist, earthy, organic or architectural interior palettes.

This is a statement piece — collected by designers, stylists and African art enthusiasts worldwide.
