Description
This rare Senufo Sejen Bird Statue is an exceptional example of West African spiritual art, standing an impressive 142.5cm tall and carved entirely by hand from a single piece of wood. Originating from the Senufo people of Northern Côte d’Ivoire and southern Mali, these iconic bird figures hold deep cultural importance within the Poro society — the central institution guiding spiritual, social, and political life for Senufo men.
Traditionally guarded in the sacred Poro groves, Sejen birds symbolise protection, wisdom, fertility, and continuity. They were brought out during major ceremonies including initiations, funerals, and the elevation of elders. In ritual performance, these birds were carried or worn, their dramatic height and elongated form serving as both a display of strength and a visual representation of ancestral power.
The distinctive long beak — often likened to the yellow-casqued hornbill, a revered bird in Senufo cosmology — reflects the union of intellectual power (male energy) and generative fertility (female energy). The swelling belly beneath it echoes creation, birth, and the promise of community renewal. The geometric motifs on the wings and torso represent coded knowledge, serving as visual lessons for initiates progressing through the ranks of Poro.
Today, authentic Sejen birds of this scale have become increasingly scarce. Their striking sculptural presence, dramatic proportions, and symbolic weight make them highly sought-after centrepieces in luxury interiors and curated art spaces around the world.
This statue is a powerful cultural object — a bold, architectural presence that transforms any room into a gallery.
