Benin Wooden King “Oba” set 2 – Hand-Carved in Nigeria

Rare Collectable**

Carved in honour of the Oba, the divine monarch of the ancient Benin Kingdom, this wooden figure captures the regal posture, ceremonial dress, and symbolic authority that defined West African royal tradition. These figures were traditionally created to celebrate kingship, pay homage to lineage, and reinforce the Oba’s political and spiritual standing.

The Benin Kingdom

The Kingdom of Benin was one of the oldest and most highly developed states in the coastal hinterland of West Africa. Formed around the 11th century, it thrived as a centre of political power, artistic excellence, and sophisticated court structure until its annexation by the British Empire in 1897.

The Oba’s Role

The Oba served as both political leader and spiritual head, presiding over a council of chiefs responsible for decisions on war, trade, taxation, and major ceremonial events. His authority extended deeper than governance — the Oba was believed to draw power from the spiritual realm through his connection with Olokun, the deity of wealth and the sea.

The Oba was considered divine. Historically, it was forbidden to speak of him performing ordinary human acts such as eating or sleeping. His presence was mysterious and sacred; he appeared publicly only for significant ceremonies.

The Artwork

This hand-carved wooden figure embodies the aesthetics of Benin royal iconography:
• Elaborate crown and regalia
• Seated posture symbolising power and authority
• Layered adornments referencing coral-bead court attire
• Strong facial structure in traditional style

At 43cm high, it holds presence and visual weight — an exceptional statement piece for collectors, designers, or anyone drawn to the heritage of West Africa.
