Description

Guinea Nimba Sculptures – Female & Male Pair (20th Century)

Guinea, 20th Century
Carved Wood with Cowrie Shell Elements
Height: 210 cm & 213 cm

Guinea Nimba sculptures attributed to the Baga region, forming a monumental 20th-century male and female pair.

The female figure reflects the D’mba (Nimba) form, distinguished by its crested head structure, projecting beak-like profile, and finely incised surface patterning. The accompanying male figure presents an elongated anthropomorphic form with an integral carved base, creating a cohesive ceremonial pairing.

Both works exceed two metres in height and possess substantial mass, consistent with monumental West African carving traditions. Surface wear and developed patina are consistent with age and long-term stationary display.

At the time of acquisition, remnants of raffia skirt elements were present on the female figure. These were removed during Australian customs processing due to deterioration.
